Nearly 200 Atlanta veterans are gathering this Saturday, September 5, to march the Atlanta Beltline in teeny tiny shorts (otherwise known as silkies) and combat boots. But it’s all for a good cause, of course. It is estimated that nearly 22 veterans commit suicide each day. The Silkies Hike was born just a few months ago in San Diego, founded by retired Marine Captain Donny O’Malley, who served in Afghanistan. He held the belief that if veterans have the opportunity to come together to talk about their unique experiences, then they are better able to access the resources they need to acclimate back to civilian life.
