Buckhead Will Outlive Us All! New Map Shows Huge Differences in Life Expectancy Across Atlanta

According to a new map from Virginia Commonwealth University, residents of Buckhead will outlive those who live near Bankhead by 13 years. The university — which has had similar findings in Chicago, Vegas, New York, D.C., Richmond, New Orleans, and Minneapolis (see all the maps online) — hopes that the startling figures will spark discussion about social factors that impact our health and what can be done to level the field.

The report explains that the variation in life expectancy is caused by a number of factors, including:

  • Unsafe or unhealthy housing
  • Availability of healthy foods
  • Exercise opportunities and outdoor spaces
  • Proximity to highways, factories, or other polluters
  • Access to doctors and hospitals
  • Poverty and limited education opportunities
