From gorgeous blooms at the Atlanta Botanical Garden to the 10th annual Big Peach 5K for Blood Cancer to a yoga class for you and your sweetie (complete with wine and chocolate!), this week’s Atlanta health and wellness events are guaranteed to bring a smile to your face and a pep to your step.
You probably thought you had mastered that whole shoe tying thing back in kindergarten, but there’s more than one way to tighten those kicks. Back in September, Big Peach Running Co.‘s Karen Kay shared the nine biggest mistakes people make when choosing their running shoes. Now the footwear expert is back to reveal lacing tricks that’ll help with two common issues: dealing with high insteps and moving around in your shoe despite wearing the correct size.

This week’s Workout of the Week (WoW) is brought to you by Big Peach Running Co. and is a great chance to get out and meet some like-minded WellATL readers. All you need to do is lace up your running shoes and meet at 6:15 on either Tuesday or Thursday evening at BPRC’s Decatur location (114 East Trinity Place) for a group run through downtown Decatur. It’s free, it’s fun, and you could win a $25 Big Peach gift card just for showing up and saying you’re there for the WellATL Workout of the Week. Sure, it’s cold outside, but nothing warms the body more than a good run and nothing warms the heart more than meeting awesome new people (awwwwww!). If you finish the WoW, log your score (sign up for Logsitall for free), and find yourself wanting more runs with awesome, supportive people, check out the weekly group runs at all seven of Big Peach’s metro locations.

Throw some confetti and pop the champagne! Creative Loafing has unveiled its 2014 Best of Atlanta winners, and they are as fabulous as you’d expect. From veterinarians to artists to mechanics, the annual awards honor the best the city has to offer. You can check out the newest issue of CL for the full list of winners across every category, but we are, of course, impressed most with the companies and places that are helping Atlantans Move Well, Eat Well, Feel Well, and Do Well. A huge congrats to these 14 winners in the health and wellness space.
Blisters, black toenails, shin splints, plantar fasciitis, IT band pain, straight-up discomfort — if going for a run causes symptoms like these, shoddy shoes might be to blame. According to the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine, during a 10-mile run, your tender tootsies endure about 15,000 strikes at three to four times your body weight. That’s a lot of impact for those 26 bones, 33 joints, and 112 ligaments to handle, so you don’t want to go jamming your paws into just any ole foot holder. But how do you find the right shoe on that giant wall of options? We turned to Karen Kaye, director of communications and community relations for Atlanta-based Big Peach Running Co., for answers.
